About Us

Welcome to Rookery Lake, a hidden gem nestled within nearly 6 acres of enchanting woodland, offering a serene and historic escape for the avid angler. This 2.5-acre body of water, adorned with an island at its far end, exudes an air of timeless tranquillity that captivates all who visit. As a private, syndicated carp lake, Rookery Lake ensures an exclusive experience with a limited membership of just 30 anglers, fostering a close-knit community of those who truly appreciate the art of fishing.

Steeped in history, Rookery Lake is an almost complete early 18th century formal landscape feature set in the valley of the Ravensbourne River. It was once part of the extensive landscape garden of ‘The ROOKERY’ , a large house on the site of Bromley College on Bromley Common. Dug in 1724 for John Webster, the merchant owner of the house, it would have been used for recreation – sitting beside, walking around punting on and fishing in! – for the Webster’s family and friends. A focal point was the mound-like island at the south end on which sat a Temple with a portico and urns; elsewhere there was a wooden cascade and a water house used to pump water up the hill to the gardens around the house.

Unlike many formal gardens the lake was hardly altered under later owners including the Norman family, resident from 1750s until the 1940s. It is therefore a remarkable historical survival. The echoes of laughter and the gentle swish of oars have long since faded, but the lake remains a picturesque testament to a bygone era, now repurposed for the peaceful pursuit of angling.

Rookery Lake is a sanctuary for both anglers and wildlife, surrounded by mature rhododendron trees that burst into vibrant colour during the spring and summer months. A well-maintained perimeter path winds its way around the lake, leading to convenient facilities, including a surfaced car park and well-kept portaloo toilets, ensuring your visit is as comfortable as it is enjoyable.

The lake is home to a diverse array of fish species, providing a rich and varied angling experience. Whether you’re targeting Carp, Tench, Bream, Pike, Roach, Perch, Catfish (to 50lb) the waters here promise excitement and challenge. In 2001 and 2002, the lake was thoughtfully restocked with over 100 Carp, many of which now weigh between 8.5 and 29lbs, making for a rewarding and thrilling fishing adventure.

Rookery Lake is more than just a place to fish; it’s a portal to a simpler, more tranquil time. Here, surrounded by the whispers of ancient trees and the ripple of water, you can connect with nature, history, and the art of angling in a way that few places can offer. Come and experience the unique charm and peaceful beauty of Rookery Lake, where every visit is a journey into the heart of tranquillity.
